Ginger de Paris started dancing at the age of 5. After taking extensive dance training, she became a teacher at the age of 18, making her the youngest dance instructor in France. After winning the most prestigious scholarship from the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs, she came to New York City to further study her dancing. It was there at Café Society, that Chris and Ginger met. Shortly after, they became known as the Fred & Ginger dance team.

Christopher Reilly originally got his dance training from Arthur Murray's dance school, in New York City, where he stayed on and taught for 5 years. He also taught 2 years at the Fred Astaire Dance Studios in New York.

Earlier in Christopher Reilly’s career, Chris developed and produced the very first instructional video for brides and grooms to be, which turned the industry upside down. Earning him articles and write-ups in Forbs, USA Today, TV Guide, US News World Report, Modern Bride, Bride, Elegant Brides, Etc.

As a team, Ginger and Chris started to teach and danced all over NYC, at places such as Columbia University, Academy of Arts, NYU, Barnard College, Yale club, Plaza Hotel, Cornell and Harmony clubs, Red Blazer, Rainbow room, Etc.

Moving on, they taught and danced across Europe, winning first place award in Greece.

Having taught swing dance for years, it was only natural that Ginger and Chris produced another video to preserve their talent for generations to come.

Best Instructional Dance Video we have purchased!“ May 30, 2001

Reviewer from Ridgeland, MS United States:
"
This tape is outstanding. If you are looking for a tape that will start you at the most basic level of swing and teach you the moves, Learn to Swing will do just that. There are twenty-one different steps shown for triple swing and eleven for single swing. Chris and Ginger begin with a demonstration of what the step should look like, then they take you slowly through the step showing the guy's part and the girl's part four times each. After that, they review the step with music. This means you won't spend all of your time rewinding. We are also pleased with the overall quality of production. Many of the tapes we have purchased had poor sound or lighting or weird camera angles which made them difficult to follow; Learn to Swing raises the standard for instructional tapes by avoiding those pitfalls. We knew only a couple of swing steps when we started using this tape and now we know many more and have learned to do them with smoother technique. Another feature of this tape that sets it apart from others is its length. At three hours, this tape packs in more instruction than you can find in three or four other tapes. Definitely the best value for your money."

Sarah Sloboda, All Movie Guide:
Taught by professional swing dance instructors, Learn to Swing Dance provides in-depth instruction for beginning dancers, as well as unique moves for dancers with more experience. Both the male and female movements for each step are carefully explained and demonstrated several times, and then done full-speed with music of various tempos. The video covers proper form, technique, and rhythm, and offers an extensive set of dance moves for beginning to intermediate levels.

Reviewer: Editor: Bette-Lee Fox from New York:
"Yes, you do need more swing dance instruction in your library, especially if it's this two set, jam-packed with 32 moves, including everything from basic turns to swivels, kicks, and syncopated steps. There are steps for both single and triple-step swing, with very little overlap. Instructors Chris Reilly and Ginger de Paris demonstrate each step to music, followed by the "guy's and gal's gig," in which clear shots of footwork and body movement show the leader's and follower's patterns. Follow-up demos of each move are done to both slow and fast music, and a review sequence is shown after every five moves. Reilly does constant voice-over narration that describes the counts and leads. No rewinding is necessary, since each move gets repeated at least a dozen times. Both beginners and more advanced dancers will find something they can use here, whether it's the underarm turn, wrap-in, heel rocks, or the boogie woogie. Recommended!"

What I have learned over the years in teaching Swing Dancing to couples and Individuals is that breaking down every move is essential for success:

  • Man’s foot work

  • Woman’s foot work (inverted from the man’s)

  • Dance position (head, arms and feet)

Taking our combined years of experience of teaching and Chris’s video production expertise, we came up with a unique teaching method that takes full advantage of video instruction!

Part of which, is that each step is repeated 4 times separately, making it easy to follow along, without a lot rewinding. The main focus of filming is shot from behind so you don’t have to TRANSPOSE (flip around) the steps in your head.

And this is done for both the “Gal’s and Guy’s” footwork. So all this goes into each step, giving the student a working understanding of the WHOLE dance step.
